Saint Catherine the Great Martyr

Saint Catherine was one of the great martyrs of Orthodoxy, who remained steadfast in her beliefs despite the pressures and tortures she suffered, during the early 4th century (304 AD). According to Rufinus, her first name was Dorothea. After her baptism, however, she received the name Catherine, that is, she who is always pure, pure. She was the daughter of nobles, intelligent and studious. Already at the age of eighteen she possessed the knowledge of Greek, Roman and Latin philology and philosophy, but she was also thoroughly trained in the doctrines of the Christian faith.

When the Christians were persecuted during the reign of Emperor Maxentius, Catherine defiantly spread the word that Jesus Christ is the only True God. For this reason, she was arrested by the prefect of the area, who tried to convince her with discussions. When the prefect realized the superiority of Catherine's words, he called a public debate with the most worthy orators of Alexandria, but Catherine silenced them.In fact, some of the interlocutors were convinced of her reasons and embraced the Christian Faith.

Faced with this fate, the prefect ordered her to be severely tortured in the hope that she would bend and deny Christ. But Catherine remained steadfast in her faith. He was finally beheaded, following an order from the prefect.
