Virgin Mary of the Sweet Kiss

A beloved image of the Virgin Mary to the faithful is "Glykofilousa". A source of inspiration is the well-known original historical image of the Virgin of Glykophilous of the Holy Monastery of Philotheos on Mount Athos.

The history of this image is related to iconoclasm. During the reign of Emperor Theophilus in the first decades of the 9th century, the wife of Simeon Patrikios Victoria, a pious and virtuous woman, had this icon in her home. But because the opponents of the Icons were also searching the houses for icons and burning them, the woman was forced to leave her. He received the icon, took it to the seaside of Constantinople, and prayed to the Virgin Mary to protect it. The Image stood up and began to sail.

Tradition states that he sailed to the eastern side of Mount Athos, specifically to the port of the holy Monastery of Philotheus. But at that time Filotheou had not yet been established. So the Icon remained, unknown where, for 150 years. And when the Philotheou Monastery was built and rebuilt in Koinovio, it made its appearance on the beach. The Fathers saw her and descended making a litany. Approaching, they saw it glittering and with the first movements of the abbot towards the sea, the Icon was delivered into his hands. Coming out of the sea at the place where she was buried, she spewed out holy water, which exists to this day. With blessings and thanksgiving, she was deposited in the central temple of the Monastery.
