Mother of Mercy

The first apparition of the Virgin took place miraculously on April 30, 1954 to the eight-year-old Athanasios Syros where with the pure heart of his young age he saw the Virgin Mary. That same night, the Virgin told him at which point he would find Her icon and that Her wish was to build a temple at the spot where the icon was found. Little Athanasios tells his fellow villagers what had happened, but they thought it was the child's exaggeration. Athanasios built a small church with stones and placed an image of the Virgin Mary while every day he lit the candle and prayed to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The fellow villagers of Athanasios paid more attention to his words after the lapse of eight years when a deadly disease struck the living of the village. In June 1962, following the actions of the village authorities, an excavator brought to light the image of the Virgin Mary, which had been at a depth of 1.5 meters for centuries! Initially a small church was built which was not enough for the faithful and in 1972 a magnificent monastery was inaugurated. Our Lady of Mercy performed and continues to perform many miracles for all those who worship Her grace with faith.
