Virgin Mary Eleftherotria
Virgin Mary the Liberator was named so because she liberated our race, she was named so because during the years of the Byzantine Empire she was recognized as a Great General. That is why the Byzantines wisely established the 1st of October to celebrate Agia Tes Skepi, which of course for the Greek standards was moved a little later, to the 28th of October, to join our national holiday. And to honor the Virgin Mary again, since she was once again connected with our very recent history.
Virgin Mary Eleftherotria does not only deliver us from our visible enemies, but above all from some other enemies that are within us. Our internal enemies, which are our passions, which point us to another slavery, which are our temptations, which want to take us out of the way of God and put us on the paths of perdition, with a fatal outcome. The Virgin Mary frees us from this and that is why she is celebrated and called Eleftherotria. Liberator of souls and then of bodies and of our country. Liberator from what concerns us, troubles us, hurts us.
Orthodox Church celebrates her memory on August 15
