Saint Gerasimos
He was born in 1509 in Trikala, Corinth, and at the age of 20, due to his intense faith in God, he made pilgrimages to the most important spiritual religious centers of his time. His first stop was Constantinople and the Ecumenical Patriarchate from where he received the patriarchal blessing and immediately after Mount Athos, where he became a monk. Then, he visited the Holy Land.
Besides the Holy Sepulchre, he was found in Syria, Damascus, Sinai, Antioch, Alexandria and the Theban desert, where, imitating the Lord himself, he retired to Mount Sarantario to fast for forty days. In this hard spiritual struggle of his he was confronted with infinite diabolical temptations. That is why he richly received from God the miraculous grace to heal diseases and cast out demons.
After a multi-year spiritual journey, which lasted a full twenty-six years, and enriched with divine experience and ascetic knowledge, he arrived in 1555 in Kefalonia, where he decided to settle in the area of the Omals at the foot of Mount Ainos and found a monastery.
Saint Gerasimos died on August 15. His tent miraculously remained untouched by the ravages of time. He was called a young ascetic to distinguish him from Saint Gerasimos the Jordanite.
Orthodox Church celebrates his memory on October 20
