Saint Phanourios

He became known by an accidental finding of his icon in the 14th century in Rhodes. During excavations in the southern part of the old city walls, an ancient Christian church was found with many damaged icons and one well-preserved one. It depicted a young soldier holding a cross and a lighted candle, while twelve representations were painted around the image. These are scenes of cruel and great martyrdoms suffered by the Saint and reveal a great and brave athlete of the faith. The icon bore an inscription with the words "Agios Fanourios".Metropolitan Nilos rebuilt this ancient temple and dedicated it to the name of Agios Fanourios, who apparently also composed the sequence.

Orthodox Church celebrates his memory on August 27
