Saint John the Baptist
John the Baptist, also called John the Forerunner, is a Saint and prophet of Christianity. He was the son of priest Zacharias and Elizabeth and was born 6 months before the birth of Jesus Christ. John with his teaching prepared the world to welcome the Messiah Jesus, hence the designation "Forerunner".
As a biblical figure, he is considered to be at the crossroads between the Old and New Testaments. In the Old, he is considered as a "Prophet" while in the New, as a "Forerunner". John is mentioned by all four Evangelists. His teaching was telling, asking every person to stop their immorality, baptizing those who made such a decision. Alongside his sermons was his appearance as well as his ascetic life and diet. He wore a woolen garment "made of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist".And his diet was wild honey and locusts. Both this appearance and the ascetic life of John alongside the sermons and baptisms of repentance that he gave were next to invite a multitude of listeners from all over Palestine who rushed to hear him, among them soldiers, Sadducees and Pharisees whom he then baptized in the Jordan River. His action attracted the attention of the Great Council of the Jews who sent a delegation to find out about John and received as a response the prophetic saying of the Prophet Isaiah "voice of a cry in the wilderness, make clear the way of the Lord"Jesus Christ also met him there and asked him to baptize him. He initially refused, but Christ insisted, and John baptized Jesus Christ in the waters of the Jordan River.
According to the Gospel of Luke, he openly disapproved of the relationship of the then tetrarch of Galilee, Herod Antipas, with his brother's wife. This resulted in the imprisonment and subsequent beheading of John.
