Saint Dionysius of Zakynthos

Saint Dionysios was born in 1547 AD. in the village of Aigialos, Zakynthos. He was the scion of a wealthy family. After the end of his parents' life, at the age of 20, he decides to take the lonely shape. This follows from the donation of all the property to his brother with special mention of the restoration of his sister. The inclination was already evident from an early age because he followed an ascetic life based on the Orthodox paternal theology and became a monk in the royal monastery of Strofades, taking the name Daniel. In this way he dedicated himself to prayer, the study of the scriptures and led an ascetic life, which he so longed for. Soon his spiritual progress was also evident, as a result of which 2 years later he became abbot of the monastery.

In 1577 he wanted to go to the Holy Land. Passing through Athens, he wanted to receive the blessing of Bishop Nicanor. Nicanor was impressed by the education, education and stoicism of the saint and wanted to promote him to the episcopal office of the diocese of Aegina, as he did taking the name Dionysios. The work he accomplished on the island of Aegina was important both from a spiritual point of view and in the relief of the burdened and poor.

In 1579, however, he was forced to resign due to the ascetic life and constant work, which strained his health. Dionysios returns to Zakynthos. Patriarch Jeremias anoints him as the regional bishop of Zakynthos. However, his activity in Zakynthos caused friction with the bishopric and Dionysios resigned his position in order not to cause further tensions. He died in 1622. He was buried in the Strophadon Monastery and during the exhumation his remains came out fragrant and incorruptible. He was declared the Patron Saint of Zakynthos. Saint Dionysios performed many miracles while it is known to all that he even forgave the murder of his brother.

Orthodox Church celebrates his memory on December 17
